Guesses and Memories
Olive Hindmarsh (whose mother was Mary Elizabeth Hindmarsh nee Jones) occassionally
mentioned her childhood:
- Olive always believed her Grandfather (Henry Jones) was a wealthy man. She understood that just before he died he was converted to Roman Catholicism by relatives and persuaded to leave his money to the church and the RC relatives, even though Olive’s mother was a struggling widow. (according to records, Henry Jones was RC). Was this a confused childhood memory of her grandfather's marriage to his housekeeper?
- Understood that he had made his money as a "Contractor" to the government and the he went bust in the 1890s depression. She had a small note book with calculations that she believed was his.
- Going with her mother and elder sister to see a relative (Jones?). To her the house was grand with cast iron gates. Her mother had to enter by the side door (servants entrance). The two girls were left outside. Olive remembered eating ants while waiting.
- Alwasy believed that two uncles were bachelors and wool classers by trade (were these her mothers brothers?)
Some questions of little consequence and most likely impossible to answer:
Immmigration records record Henry and Mary as being Cof E, but later records have them as RC. Adult conversion or incorrect information on the immigration record?
Henry Jones marries his housekeeper, did much of his remaining wealth go to the second wife - hence the trip of Olive Hindmarsh to the house with the iron gates
Henry Jones jnr - found dead by the side of the road - for some days...
Robert Jones. No Victorian death record that I could find. Woolclassers often travelled to NSW for work, his death record could be there
